More Than One Way to the Linux Desktop Free Training Web Conference

Join Ziff Davis Media, eWEEK Labs, Wyse Technology for the latest update in the shift towards Linux desktop computing on Aug 18, 2004 at 2 p.m. EST / 11 a.m. PST

When most business people think of a Linux desktop, they think of a traditional desktop like that of Windows. But, it doesn't have to be that way.

While some companies, like Red Hat, Linspire (formerly Lindows) and Xandros, are pursuing the traditional desktop, aka the fat client, others, such as Wyse, Novell, IBM and Sun believe that corporate America is ready to give thin clients another try.

Why? There are many reasons, among them are: lower desktop support costs, centralized management and improved security. At a time when not a day goes by without news of yet another Windows virus or security problem, the promise of a Linux-based desktop that's not constantly under siege is one that companies believe will find today's businesses very attractive.

This seminar will examine:

  1. The pluses of the thin-client approach to the desktop: such as better TCO and ROI.
  2. The state of the Linux thin-client today.
  3. The pluses of the Linux fat-client approach. This will look at the efforts of Red Hat, Linspire, and Xandros.
  4. The state of the Windows desktop today, along with a brief overview of Windows thin-client solutions such as those of Citrix.
  5. An overview of the state of desktop-based end-user applications for the two platforms.
  6. An overview of how companies should decide between thin and fat clients, Linux and Windows, for their near-future desktop needs.
