The rapid explosion of "consumer-driven health plans (CDHPs)" has created a huge dilema for veteran health insurance agents who will need to learn about these programs or find another career. The National Association of Alternative Benefit Consultants (NAABC) now offers online training and live seminars to address the education problem. With passage of Health Savings Account (HSA)legislation as part of the Medicare Reform Bill of 2003 and the Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) rulings put out by the Treasury Department in 2002, health insurance agents have been faced with trying to find comprehensive and credible information on these plans from insurance sources.
Other than insurance carrier product introduction meetings, called "roll-outs", there has been little agent-oriented online training or information available on the "How Tos" of CDHPs. The Glen Ellyn, Illinois-based National Association of Alternative Benefit Consultants (NAABC) offers both generic and comprehensive agent online training leading to an advanced insurance designation called the "Chartered Benefit Consultant (CBC)".
CBC training is done both in seminar version in an increasing number of states and through Interactive Computer online and offers from 12-15 hours of insurance continuing education credits in states where available.
As of this date, approximately 250 agents have acquired the CBC designation and are posted on the "Chartered Benefit Consultant Directory" (www.naabc.com/cbcd.htm) which is linked with the HSA sites of the U.S Treasury, CashDoctor.com and other organizations to help the public in finding insurance agents who have completed the classes and have passed a proficiency exam in the area of CDHPs.
The National Association of Alternative Benefit Consultants (NAABC) was incorporated in the State of Delaware on March 1, 1999 and currently has approximately 600 members in throughout the nation. The organization began the online training and instruction of CBC in April 2002, began offering IC classes in October 2003 and local seminar version classes in March 2004. |
