Smart to begin commercial 3G streaming video service in May

Smart Communications Inc. said it will start charging post-paid and pre-paid subscribers of its 3G service. The company said that subscribers using 3G-capable handsets will now pay certain rates to enjoy applications such as live streaming video from two major television networks and 3G downloads of full music tracks and video clips.

Launched on February 14, Smart has offered its 3G services, such as streaming video, video calls, high-speed Internet browsing and downloading of special 3G content on a free-trial basis.

Starting May 1, Smart said that the introductory pricing Smart 3G services will be "aligned with existing 2G rates while some services will remain free of charge."

Subscribers using video calling service will not be charged.

Video and audio streaming services, which includes viewing of "real-time" television programs using 3G phones will cost  based on a running time that starts when a subscriber clicks on a streaming link regardless of the number of videos viewed.

Aside from the access charge, there will be a separate fee for content.

Smart 3G subscribers can watch GMA Network and ABS-CBN television live via video streaming.

Accessing streaming movie trailers, live traffic and summer hotspots cameras and music videos will remain free of charge.

Smart currently has approximately a quarter of a million subscribers with 3G capable hand
